Buckhorn on Caribou

Our Story

A Legacy Rooted in the Northwoods

Buckhorn on Caribou is more than just a lakeside resort—it’s a labor of love, hand-built from the ground up in one of Minnesota’s most pristine wilderness settings. What started as a family dream evolved into a beloved destination known for its tranquility, authenticity, and stunning log craftsmanship. Nestled on the shores of crystal-clear Caribou Lake and surrounded by the Chippewa National Forest, Buckhorn offers a peaceful escape from the noise of everyday life.

This special place has been family owned for nearly a century. New construction of the log homes began when the Mangni family purchased the property in 1998. Whether you’re here to fish, gather with loved ones, or simply listen to the wind in the pines, we welcome you to experience the Northwoods the way it was meant to be.

Craftsmanship You Can Feel

Each cabin at Buckhorn was built by Tim Mangni and his top-notch crew, using white pine and cedar selected for both strength and beauty. These aren’t factory-cut or prefab structures—every log was hand-scribed, notched, and placed with care. The result is a collection of homes that blend naturally into the surrounding landscape while offering exceptional durability, warmth, and rustic elegance.

Inside, guests enjoy soaring wood-beam ceilings, custom cabinetry, real stone fireplaces, and open-concept living that brings family and friends together. Many of our cabins feature private saunas, docks, and decks—perfect for watching sunsets or stargazing by the lake.

At Buckhorn, hospitality is personal. We take pride in maintaining a welcoming, hands-on approach that keeps guests returning year after year. Our team is small, and we treat every guest like extended family—because to us, they are.

Need extra firewood? Want to know where the trout are biting? Looking for a quiet snowshoe trail? We're here to help, whether it's your first visit or your fifteenth. This resort has grown through word of mouth, and the friendships we’ve formed over the years are at the heart of who we are.

Hospitality That Feels Like Home

Buckhorn is open year-round, offering unique experiences with each season. In summer, guests swim in waters so clear you can see forty feet down, fish for lake trout and bass, or enjoy hiking, canoeing, and evening bonfires. Winter transforms the area into a serene wonderland with access to cross-country ski trails, snowmobiling routes, and cozy indoor fireplaces.

Our cabins cater to a range of guests—from couples looking for a quiet retreat, to large family reunions, retreats, and weddings. Several of our larger lodges offer spacious common areas, multiple bathrooms, and fully stocked kitchens to handle big gatherings with ease.

Designed for All Seasons and All Guests

Sustainability and stewardship guide our operations. The resort sits on over 100 acres of forested land, and we take care to preserve the natural setting that draws people here in the first place. Trails, trees, and shoreline are maintained with respect for local wildlife and water health.

We also take pride in supporting the broader community, recommending local eateries, outfitters, and attractions that offer our guests the best of Northern Minnesota.

Our Commitment to Nature and Community

Looking Ahead

As we move into the future, our goal remains the same: to provide a peaceful, authentic, nature-rich retreat where people can disconnect from the rush and reconnect with what matters. We’re currently developing new offerings and continuing improvements across the property to better serve guests while preserving the character and quiet that define Buckhorn.

A Place to Return To

Buckhorn on Caribou is a place where traditions are made and memories are passed from one generation to the next. Whether you visit in July for family fishing, or in February for a quiet snowy weekend, we hope you’ll consider Buckhorn your Northwoods home away from home.
